Gunung Baling

Gunung Baling

Gunung Baling is a popular hiking destination in Malaysia with a well-signposted trailhead located at the side of the main road from Baling to Pengkalan Hulu. The hike is a straightforward uphill climb with a few scrambles over sharp and jagged limestone rocks. However, a permit is required from the Pendakian Gunung Baling office and a guide will be assigned to each group of up to 10 people, at a cost.

Overnighting on the summit is not allowed, so hikers must plan for a day trip. The trail starts off with a mellow climb over ropes and then gradually ascends following a well-marked footpath equipped with handrails. Along the way, hikers will reach Gua Kambing, a cave set inside the peak’s limestone, and will climb a wooden ladder to pass through a hole in the rock.

After Gua Kambing, hikers will continue to haul themselves up the trail until reaching the final ridge. At the peak, hikers can enjoy breathtaking views that stretch all the way to Penang Island in the west and to Thailand in the east. On a lucky day, hikers can witness a carpet of clouds. It’s worth noting that the trail can become muddy and slippery after rain, so proper gear and caution are necessary.
